On first impression, the second version seems like it conveys the idea that mobile phones are getting bigger over time, which is problematic. The first one is preferable to go along with. Maybe play around with the color of the icons. Make the icons less realistic in order to match better with the visual language model.
I deleted the shading of icons for first version, and also tweaked the color.

Firstly, the color of the phone icons is not following the color model. There are no blue color in your color model. Maybe play around with the icon to make it match better with the color model. Also, in the second version, the font of years (1995 and 2005) is not following the typography model. In the first version, the cut of the half phone made it looks like a squished phone when zoomed out. Maybe try to cut it horizontally or diagonally. Also, the slash in the labels might not be perfect way to suggest per day than just say "per day". The second version's layout is strange because the title is sticked out to the left.
I tweaked the color of the icons. I also decided not to cut the icon horizontally or diagonally because cutting it vertically followed my visual language model. Change the wording for the label.

The color of the icon is not following the color model, maybe change the colors. Also, in the first version, the labels are light gray, which is different with the years. In the visual language model, the label and description are in same color.
Redid the color of the icon in order to follow the color model. Made the label dark gray to match with the description in order to follow the visual language model.

Firstly, maybe add more description, since the data itself won't match with the visual language model. Also, maybe add more data, since there are only two data points now and they have a long time span.
​I will add body text of description later in the quarter. I did not find more data to add because I did not find some. Other similar data are from other sources, which were obtained using different sample or different method.

I can see how this emulation follows the color model and visual language model. I think the color of the phone icons are too gray. Although it follows the color, it doesn't follow the overall dynamic. Also, maybe change the half of the icon to be cut horizontally or diagonally.

Overall it is good. Maybe just change the color of the text (description and labels) so there is contrast with the phone icons.

This emulation shows:
This display shows that the average hours children spend on screens per day in 1995 and 2005. This comparison showed the trend that children are spending increasing number of hours on technologies nowadays.

However, I did not include this display in my final graphic because of limited space. I chose to include the second number display because I think that one emulates my visual language model better.

How this element exploits the visual potential of appearance:
(1) Used number encoding to show the number of hours using smartphone icons.
(2) Used identity labels to show that is this element showing.
(3) Used precision labels to show the exact data in the graph.

How this element emulates the models:
(1) To emulate my color model, I used the light and dark gray on phone icons. I also used bright orange for the title for highlighting.
(2) To emulate my visual language model, I used similar encoding (number encoding) as my visual language model. I also made the phone icons to be flat, simple and without rotating. Moreover, I made the icon by using only fill in color with no strokes in order to match my visual language model.
(3) To emulate my typography model, I used similar font and font size as the model.
